Weather & Best Time to Visit

Humantay Lake experiences two distinct seasons that affect trekking conditions:

  • Dry Season (May-October): Ideal trekking conditions with clear skies, minimal rainfall, and excellent visibility. Mornings are cold (near freezing) but days warm up with sunshine. This is peak season with more visitors.
  • Rainy Season (November-April): Fewer crowds but unpredictable weather. Frequent afternoon showers, cloudy conditions, and muddy trails. The lake and surrounding peaks can be dramatic with fresh snow, but visibility may be limited.

Regardless of season, weather at 4,200m altitude changes rapidly. Temperatures typically range from -5°C to 15°C (23°F to 59°F) throughout the day.

Altitude Acclimatization Tips

Critical for Your Safety & Enjoyment:

  • Spend minimum 2-3 days in Cusco (3,400m) before attempting this trek
  • Stay hydrated – drink water continuously, not just when thirsty
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy meals the day before
  • Consider coca tea or altitude medication (consult your doctor)
  • Walk slowly and steadily – “pole pole” as they say in the mountains
  • Listen to your body – inform your guide immediately if feeling unwell
  • Symptoms of altitude sickness: headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue

Fitness Requirements

While you don’t need to be an athlete, a moderate level of fitness is required for this trek. The combination of altitude and uphill hiking for 1.5 hours can be challenging. We recommend:

  • Regular cardio exercise in the weeks before your trip
  • Practice hiking on inclines if possible
  • Ability to walk for 3-4 hours with breaks
  • No serious heart, lung, or mobility conditions

Responsible Tourism at Humantay Lake

Help us preserve this pristine environment for future generations:

  • Leave No Trace: Pack out all trash, including organic waste
  • Stay on Marked Trails: Prevent erosion and protect fragile alpine vegetation
  • Respect Sacred Sites: Humantay is considered sacred by local communities
  • No Swimming: The lake is sacred and extremely cold – swimming is prohibited
  • Minimize Noise: Maintain the peaceful atmosphere for wildlife and other visitors
  • Support Local Communities: Purchase from local vendors when appropriate

Photography Tips

Capture the magic of Humantay Lake with these pro tips:

  • Best light: Early morning arrival means perfect lighting conditions
  • Bring extra batteries – cold drains them quickly
  • Wide-angle lens recommended for landscape shots
  • Polarizing filter helps reduce glare on water
  • Include people for scale to show the immensity
  • Respect others’ photo opportunities – take turns at popular spots
